Entering the third dimension - the best 3D technology bets for 2010

(ARA) - For years, 3D technology was limited to amusement park attractions and comic books. But in 2010, 3D is everywhere -- even in your living room.

Following the mass success of "Avatar" and the popularity of other 3D movies, tech companies are launching full lineups of 3D-ready products. It's time to pick up a pair of those goofy looking glasses and invest in what's expected to be one of the biggest entertainment trends of the year. Here's an overview of the most anticipated 3D products rolling out in 2010:

On the big screen - Now that "Avatar" has become the highest grossing movie in history, 3D movies are popping up everywhere. From the upcoming Harry Potter installment to 3D remakes of every Star Wars film, directors are capitalizing on the popularity of 3D. Movie-goers can expect to see many of their favorite movies back in theaters in an updated 3D version in 2010 and 2011.

Satellite television - One of the leading Satellite TV providers plans to partner with Panasonic to launch the first-ever 3D TV. The service will be available in June 2010. Customers will get a free software upgrade for their satellite TV system that will give them access to three 3D channels. They'll just need a 3D-ready television. CBS, MTV, NBC Universal and others are developing 3D programming that will launch in 2010 and 2011. It's well-know that more satellite TV channels are broadcast in high definition than cable, and 3D channels are expected to give satellite another leg up on the competition.

DVDs: The 3D DVD launch is about more than giving people a cool way to watch their favorite movies. It's also expected to reduce movie piracy. The 3D feature will be available on Blu-Ray DVDs. Sony recently announced its first Blu-Ray 3D player, the BDP-S770, which will allow people to watch hit movies like "Avatar," "Gremlins" and "Star Wars" in 3D. The player also has a Wi-Fi connection, so you can access movies from Netflix, Hulu.com and other services. The 3D DVD player is expected to roll out this summer.

The 3D TV rollout: Five years ago, most people would have laughed at the idea of a purchasing a 3D-ready television for their home. Now, it's becoming a reality. Samsung is leading the 3D-TV pack with plans to launch a line of 3D televisions that allow for real-time conversion from 2D to 3D viewing. There's also the Panasonic VIERA Full HD 3D TV. There are some big announcements coming from major networks like ESPN, which plans to launch the first official sports network in 3D this June.

The thought of owning a 3D TV or DVD player may excite you, but be sure to check the price tag and do your research. Many of the new products, with the exception of 3D DVDs and 3D satellite television, will cost you. But for many, it's worth the steep price tag to have access to the latest technology.
